Ending the Cycle of Stigma

Ending the Cycle of Stigma

Staff and
Infrastructure

We have built a self-sufficient, eco-village – with housing for 16 residents (2-3 individuals per room), a living wing for “independent-ready residents,” an urban independent-living unit, quarters for staff, temporary rooms for visiting medical staff and community clinics, a kitchen, as well as huts for farming needs. AVIEW has qualified professional, part-time, and full-time staff who provide core support to the residents.

Acute Unit

Our Acute Unit, in a unique eco-village, our method is to provide our residents with a safe and stable environment in which they can consent to medical and psychiatric treatment, self-care, and live with dignity. In a setting that closely mimics their places of origin, they can learn to perform daily living chores such as cooking, cleaning, personal hygiene, etc. Each resident receives medical support to arrive at symptom-free living.

Semi-Independent
Units

Later, they move out to a semi-independent unit, where they are provided with vocational training in accordance with their ability, aptitude, and interest, to acquire a marketable skill and build their self-confidence and gain a sense of purpose. Ideally, they would be able to use these skills to be financially independent. Small groups are formed where they start functioning as a family under the supervision of a social worker.

Independent Units

Finally they are shifted to independent units. Every attempt is made to locate the resident’s family of origin and to restore the resident to them if they are willing. We also continue to closely monitor medications to ensure their stability as long as the former residents are geographically near us. If the resident cannot return to her family, we track her progress to live in a community with group sharing responsibilities.
